Getting to & around Cappadocia

Which airport to use, how long the transfer takes, and how to get between the towns once you arrive — by transfer, taxi, minibus or rental car.

Updated 2026-06-01 · by local curators

Quick answer

Fly into Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV, ~45 min to Göreme) or Kayseri Erkilet (ASR, ~75 min), then take a private or shared transfer. Once there, get around by short taxi rides, local minibuses (dolmuş), or a rental car if you want to reach the underground cities and Ihlara Valley independently.

Getting to Cappadocia

Two airports serve the region. Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) is closest (about 45 minutes to Göreme). Kayseri Erkilet (ASR) is a little farther (about 75 minutes) but usually has more flight options and better fares.

From either airport, the simplest way in is a private or shared transfer — book ahead so a driver meets your flight. Public transport from the airports is limited and rarely worth the hassle for a short trip.

You can also reach Cappadocia overnight by bus or by train + bus from Istanbul; see our journal for the full Istanbul route options.

Getting around once you’re there

  • Taxis — plentiful and cheap for short hops between Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp and Avanos.
  • Dolmuş (minibus) — local shared minibuses run between the main towns on set routes.
  • Rental car — worth it if you want to visit the underground cities and Ihlara Valley on your own schedule; the towns are easy to drive between.
  • Organised tours — the classic "Red" and "Green" tour routes bundle the main sights with transport if you’d rather not drive.
